Company registration up 8% to over 68,000 since GST rollout: Govt

More than 68,000 companies have been registered in eight months following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, Union Minister P P Chaudhary said on Friday.
GST --the biggest tax reform-- was rolled out from July 1, 2017.
"The total number of companies registered during the period from July 2017 to February 2018 (post GST) is 68,299," the minister of state for corporate affairs said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
In comparison, the number of such entities was 63,106 between July 2016 and February 2017. Thus increasing trend in the number of companies' registrations has been maintained post GST, the minister added.

Collections under the goods and services tax (GST) were marginally lower by some Rs 100 billion, compared to the original target set by the government for the first eight months of the roll-out of the new indirect tax. The mop-up was subdued in October, November and January, and that has led to some shortfall. Against the target of Rs 7.28 trillion for the eight months, collections stand at Rs 7.18 trillion. The target was arrived from the monthly run rate of Rs 910 billion.  The run rate was, in turn, derived from the Budget Estimates and 14% indirect tax revenue growth for states for 2017-18.
